SDI Megapixel Surveillance System Implementation for the Transportation Security Administration
Project Description
The Transportation Security Administration, charged with protecting the nation's transportation systems, selected SDI to implement high definition video technology at its passenger screening checkpoints throughout O'Hare International airport.
Goals
The TSA desired to improve operational effectiveness and investigative capabilities at each TSA passenger screening checkpoint in the airport with enhanced technology allowing the TSA to better investigate possible incidents or security threats, and to monitor both passenger and employee activity at each screening lane and x-ray machine. Traditional video technology did not provide the TSA with a total single operational view of a checkpoint, nor did it provide adequate definition, detail, and clarity when cameras were zoomed in on a particular subject of interest. Through the deployment of a Megapixel, High Definition Advanced Video Solution, the TSA has significantly improved their ability to effectively utilize the detail and quality of live and recorded video information captured at the checkpoint areas. The TSA immediately realized several significant system benefits, including:
- Complete Domain and Situational Awareness: the solution provides 100% field surveillance of ALL operations, within a single view, with fewer cameras than were previously deployed.
- Elimination of PTZ "Tug of Wars": The solution provides the ability for multiple individual system operators to view and zoom into specific areas or subjects of interest without disruption or interference to other active system operators' activities and requirements, and without compromising the complete Domain view
- The ability to digitally record ALL activity ALL the time, so even when an event, activity, or incident is not witnessed live, it is captured and retrievable on recorded video
- High Definition video on demand for BOTH Live and Recorded video, delivering clarity and detail that is meaningful, relevant, and useful, with the assurance that video can now be used effectively to reduce liability and cost of claims
- Reduced Operating and Maintenance costs: reduced camera counts translated to lower installation and ongoing maintenance costs. Complete video domain awareness allows for physical reconfiguration of checkpoint screening areas without the need to add or reposition cameras

Result
