Security systems are undergoing a watershed transformation...they are converging with information technology to form advanced digital security. In the past, video surveillance, access control, and other security systems were analog, component-based systems that had limited capabilities and were difficult to integrate. Today's advanced digital security systems operate on computer platforms, using servers, networks, and storage to run software that manages digital video, biometric access control, video analytics, Physical Security Information Management (PSIM), and other systems.
The benefits of advanced digital security are numerous and significant. First, these systems have capabilities that analog systems could never achieve. The ability for computers to run sophisticated programs that analyze information and trigger automated responses provides capabilities impossible for analog systems. This computing power gives us technologies like video analytics, which intelligently analyzes people and objects in video feeds and alerts when it detects suspicious behavior. Another benefit is the ability to more easily integrate systems together to form an automated response ability. For example, an alarm in access control sends a signal to the video management system to pop up and live video of the alarm location. Simultaneously, the GIS or mapping system provides a map showing the location of the alarm, and a notification system alerts the appropriate staff.
